Alex the African Grey Parrot
When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and bought an obnoxious one-year-old African grey parrot named Alex and began a 30-year experiment that changed the way we view avian intelligence. Alex's research disproved the belief that birds can only imitate human language, but not understand the meaning.
What is Alex?
At first, Alex (short for Avian Learning Experiment) was just an ordinary African grey parrot bought from a pet store. But over the course of his life, he set trails in animal psychology that were far above anything that was thought to be possible. He also proved that animals can be as intelligent as dolphins or primates. Alex was one the most famous talking bird in the world until his death in 2007. He appeared on TV shows and in scientific reports.
In his lifetime, Alex learned over 150 words and could identify the colors, shapes, materials, and quantities of objects. He also understood the meaning behind words something that is not typical for birds. When he heard "grape" and he realized that it was not a plant but a fruit. Dr. Pepperberg taught Alex words in a manner that made him understand them. She and a colleague would role-play as students and teachers, and Alex was watching the actions and listened to the explanations. When he understood the correct pronunciation and meaning of the word, he was rewarded with the object associated with it.
Another fascinating aspect of how she trained Alex was that she taught him the meaning behind words, not just the sounds. This was a revolutionary method because pet parrots generally only learn words to enhance their novelty. When the owners say a particular word they aren't necessarily meaning what they are saying. However with Alex, when he said a certain word was a true statement of what he was saying.
Many people are enthralled by the fact that Alex could acquire so many things however, some scientists have argued that it was unfair to compare Alex to humans in terms of intelligence. They have pointed out that while Alex was able to communicate but he didn't have the ability to work with logic, such as "if x, then y."
Alex's research into animal consciousness and intelligence is controversial. Until his death in 2007 at the age of 31 Alex was among the most famous talking parrots of all time.
What was Alex like?
Alex was a violent member of a gang that enjoyed brutal actions. Despite gizmo the grey parrot , Alex was a likable character and seemed to enjoy the power that he wielded over his fellow hoodlums. He was a narcissist to two things in his life: violence and classical music, especially Beethoven who's music always brought up images of blood and depravity to him. He also was a regular drinker of milk spiked with drugs, which he and his gang members would then use to fortify themselves for their "ultraviolence."
Alex's unremarkable background as an African Grey parrot at a pet store was a great help. He was quick to learn concepts and words from his human trainer, Irene Pepperberg. Her thirty-year study of him revolutionized the theories of animal cognition and communication. She credited Alex for teaching her to apply the model of competition, which proved useful in other animals as well as children with learning disabilities.
Dr. Pepperberg continued her research with other parrots and parrots, including Wart and Griffin. She is now a professor at the University of Washington, where she continues her pioneering work with birds.
Alex is the tiniest member of the group, and also the most childlike. She is a bit of an obnoxious girl, and has been described by other members as being a bit ticklish. She is the most animal-friendly member of the group. She is usually the one to make peace when Clover and Sam get into meaningless arguments (such as "Abductions")
Alex has a remarkably self-assured sense of identity, which she uses to manipulate other people. This has led to her getting into fights with other gang members, including her longtime foe Gigi who she blames for spilling juice on her blanket as when she was a kid ("Mime World") She also has an Emo/Goth personality and enjoys wearing black clothing and writing poetry about love and loss ("Boy Bands Will Be Boy Bands"). The show's creators have said that Seth MacFarlane's song is her favorite and that she has dated him.
What was Alex like in terms of intelligence?

When Irene Pepperberg first saw him at the pet shop, Alex was already an accomplished talker. He could identify and request objects, utter their names and even classify them. He could also express his emotions such as when he was bored or annoyed during training sessions. He would inform his trainers of this by putting his chin on his cage or by shouting loudly "I want banana."
Alex's intelligence is so advanced that he is able to comprehend and classify objects, their colors, shapes and materials. He could also tell the distinction between bags made of plastic and wooden box, and also determine the quantity of different items. He even grasped the concept of zero, which most people don't grasp until around four years old!
Alex's skills were impressive as, unlike other parrots Alex understood what he was saying. He could use his over 100 words to describe, request and refuse objects as well as communicate the sizes and types of materials. He was able comprehend the analogies and recognize written words but was not to be able to connect them with their spoken forms.
Parrots are the majority of birds that learn to speak, but they don't understand their meaning. To teach Alex, Pepperberg and her assistants would enact scenarios involving the object they wanted him to learn about. This technique is known as the rival model and has become a well-known way to teach animals.
In official statement to his cognitive abilities, Alex was a friendly and playful dog who enjoyed interacting with his owners. He was often an advisor and cheerleader during training sessions. He would encourage his owners or encourage them to be better. He was also very observant and was able to sense the emotions of his human companions. He would often leap into his owner's arms when she was happy, and would cling to her leg when she was sad or angry.
What was Alex's influence?
In the short time he lived, Alex changed the lives of a lot of people. His legacy is an example of his determination and the strength of his character. He was an inspiration to many climbers, mountaineers, and people who aspired to live life on their own terms. He taught them that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. He believed that you can achieve the heights of success if you do not worry about what others think.
Chris/Alex faced many challenges during his journey. He had to deal with the loss of his father, financial difficulties and even adversity. He was successful in overcoming all these challenges with his will and perseverance. He never gave up on his dream of becoming a mountaineer. He never gave up on his goal of becoming a mountain climber.
Even after his death, he continues to inspire people around the world. The film Free Solo is a documentary about Alex's life and his incredible achievements in climbing. This film has received great critical acclaim and is considered one of the best documentaries ever produced. It has won numerous awards, including the Academy Award in 2019 for Best Documentary Feature.
In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also set the standard for new avenues in bird intelligence. Alex was able to sing more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions. He was also able to count up to six object sets and showed math skills that were considered advanced in the day for a bird.
He could also communicate with other animals via signs and had a good understanding of grammar. He used a training method known as "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they were trying to teach it. The trainers changed their positions frequently so that the bird could be in a position to interact with both trainers and receive rewards and attention from each of them.
Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. He was able to accomplish many things throughout his life because of his strength of character and his determination to live life on his terms.
